The Packaging Engineer plans and implements packaging designs to ensure product integrity and appeal. Their primary duties include supervising and managing the complete packaging development process, analyzing engineering drawings, and conducting periodic vendor reviews. The Packaging Engineer creates and develops effective designs to create packaging that’s functional, cost effective, and fits a project’s brief. This involves generating ideas and concepts, testing different designs, working with internal teams during the manufacturing process, and reviewing the efficiency of the final packaging.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing
Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions
Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging
Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews
Work closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing
Participate in product introduction teams, to deliver new products to market
Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage
Work closely with R&D and Supply Chain to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements
Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs
Work with the manufacturing department to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability
Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging exceeds customer specifications
25% Travel Required: NE and Nationally
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, industrial/commercial packaging or related field required
Experience working in an FDA controlled, SQF or cGMP production environment
QA/QC experience with supplier audit visits, highly preferred
Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards is essential
Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD software is needed
4+ years’ experience in manufacturing environment
Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Experience in the medical cannabis industry not required, but a plus
Scientific writing for processes, training, and procedures that require documentation
Lean manufacturing or six sigma knowledge a plus
Team player with the ability to gain consensus through collaboration and open dialogue
A sense of urgency, high energy, and hands-on approach
Subject to background check per state cannabis regulations
Current Driver’s license required
