Sr Director of Local Government, Public, and Community Relations will be the face of Curaleaf in the Northeast communities and states we operate, with regulatory oversight bodies and third-party groups. The successful candidate must be capable of understanding the substantive issues associated with the cannabis industry, particularly as it relates to policy issues, safety, compliance, operational issues, taxes, and other business drivers. The individual will be required to develop and implement an aggressive plan for successfully achieving specific state government relations results that are favorable to the interests of the system.

In formulating and implementing a successful local government relations program for Curaleaf, the individual must manage and oversee numerous jurisdictions with multiple legislative consultants and trade associations. He/she will work effectively with senior management, regional management, and corporate management.  The candidate will also have to form coalitions, help run initiatives, and directly lobby key political leaders.

The successful candidate will possess significant political acumen and have established local government relations expertise and strategic planning capabilities.

The Sr Director NE Government Relations will provide greater strategic planning for an ever-changing Government Relations Department.  Review and track the effects of legislation on the company.  Direct all strategies in building relationships with local and state legislators to support legislation favorable to the corporation’s interests.  Educating and developing a strategy for local compliance and operations leads to building relationships with local legislators and regulators.  Generate continuous improvement methods to increase government relations partnerships and legislative relationships at local and state levels.  Direct recruitment and training of lobbyists.


Develop strategies on regulatory and legislative issues impacting the Curaleaf in local governments

Advocate and manage third-party groups to best address system priorities

Establish and maintain a sophisticated local political contact network

Be a proactive strategic agent on behalf of Curaleaf and help set the agenda, form the agenda, and shape future events

Manage legislative consultants

Maintain and advocate for Curaleaf in associations in numerous jurisdictions

Advocate on behalf of the regional staff and their needs

Direct field activities when grassroots action is necessary to influence legislation

Develop and maintain communication pathways with operation leadership and senior management, advising them on all matters relating to local legislation and public policy issues of interest

Work closely with federal affairs staff and provide information, advice, and perspective concerning local government leadership, policies, and activities


EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:                 


Candidates should have a minimum of 8+ years' experience in local government and or community affairs. Familiarity with the cannabis industry is a plus

An undergraduate degree and 5 or more years of Government Relations and or regulatory experience is required. Direct local lobbying and community relations experience is significantly weighted

Bachelor’s degree in public/governmental relations or related field and 5 or more years relevant experience

At least 5 years of related work experience in government or public/external relations

Superior written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate with internal and external audiences (we will request a sample of your writing)

Well-developed interpersonal skills

Excellent negotiation and facilitative skills

Demonstrated ability to build consensus, establish trust and foster culture change

Demonstrated business acumen, customer awareness, and ability to create value

Good working knowledge of the cannabis industry including direct experience in addressing emerging policy issues related to the industry

Proven strategic planning skills. Demonstrated ability to interface with and advise regional leadership, lead cross-functional teams, build consciences, establish trust and foster culture change

An ability to quickly grasp and address the specific issues facing the industry

A thorough understanding of local legislative and regulatory processes and how they impact the industry

Experience developing and implementing a local government affairs strategy, including short-term and long-term goals and establishing methods of measuring the plan’s impact on and contribution to the organization

Experience developing a political communications strategy and the ability to persuasively communicate complex concepts and programs at the highest levels of government and business

A proven record of advancing important issues through the local legislative process

The ability to work and be an integral part of an action-oriented, decision-making working environment

Established grassroots and coalition-building skills
